I just felt like running
So I'd like to share another side of my life that I am addicted to in addition to game development. That is the art of running. Specifically, long distance running.
It has a lot of similarities to game development. Both require long term perseverance, determination, willpower and drive. You really have to WANT to run, just like you have to WANT to make a game. It's the passion behind the two arts that make them so alike.
I often think about a lot of things during my run. Today I ran 26.2 miles, which is a full marathon. During the 3 hours and 45 minutes of non-stop running, I had a lot of time to think about all sorts of things. Life, relationships, finances, goals, etc. I often have incredible insights and find solutions to problems DURING my run. I've solved many bugs in my game by thinking about them during a run. Magically, the solution will pop into my mind, as if I had always known the answer. It's amazing how stepping away from the computer for a few hours and doing physical activity can impact the way our brains think and function. In fact, it's causing The Last AntLion to come out better than if I were not running.
I definitely feel smarter because of running regularly. I feel mentally more relaxed and capable of completing long term tasks that are normally difficult without running in my life.
For any of you game developers or gamers out there, I highly suggest adding some sort of physical activity into your life 3-5 days a week. It will help in all aspects of your day, both mentally and physically and you will produce a better product, and most importantly - a better you.
